STUDENT SPOTLIGHT - MARY KATE MILLER
Mary Kate Miller’s Journey from HCC to Pharmacy Doctorate
Henderson native Mary Kate Miller, a 2020 graduate of both Henderson County High School
and Henderson Community College’s Early College Academy (ECA), recently earned her
Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from the University of Kentucky at the age of just
23.
Mary Kate’s connection to HCC runs deep. She is a second-generation HCC graduate, following in the footsteps of her mother, Jennifer Tarr. In addition, Mary Kate’s maternal grandmother Glenda Parker worked at HCC and her maternal grandfather Alan Parker also took classes here. “HCC has always been a part of my family’s story,” she shared. “It’s amazing to think that we’ve all walked the same halls, pursuing our dreams.”
For Mary Kate, the decision to join HCC’s Early College Academy was clear from an early age. “Very early on in high school, I knew I wanted to be a part of ECA to help out with my goals of completing a doctorate-level degree faster and more financially friendly,” she explained. The program allowed her to earn college credits while still in high school, accelerating her journey toward her goal of becoming a pharmacist.
Reflecting on her time in the ECA, Mary Kate described the close-knit group of students who supported each other through the rigorous program. “Our ECA group was very close-knit and committed to making high school still fun while also encouraging each other to succeed,” she said. One of her best friends from the program, Abby Nelson, remains a cherished part of her life today. “It was so nice to be surrounded by like-minded individuals while in such a vulnerable stage of life that is high school.”
She also emphasized the importance of building relationships with professors and taking full advantage of the resources available at HCC. “My advice for all prospective students is to build relationships with your professors. They really do care about you and will help you be successful,” she said. “Take advantage of all the great resources that are available at HCC, from the facility amenities to career advice from Angie Watson. You definitely get out of it what you put in, and everyone there genuinely wants you to succeed.”
Mary Kate expressed gratitude to several individuals who made a lasting impact on her time at HCC. She gave a special shoutout to professors Kara Becker and Bill Gary for their unwavering support. “They were always so great at being supportive of my plans and making my whole HCC experience one to always remember,” she said. “
As Mary Kate prepares to begin her clinical pharmacy residency, she stands as a shining example of how HCC’s programs can pave the way for remarkable achievements.
Congratulations, Mary Kate!
