HCC Celebrates Holiday Tradition with Hanging of the Mittens
Published on Nov 25, 2019
Henderson, KY – Every holiday season, Henderson Community College (HCC) participates in the long held tradition of Hanging of the Mittens. On Wednesday, December 4, at 11:00 AM in the Student Center (SCR) lobby, HCC will be hosting a gathering, featuring refreshments and a musical performance by the talented Heather McCormick, Former HCC Music Professor. All in the community are invited.
While the Hanging of the Green is observed on college campuses around the country, in 2001, HCC changed the tradition to Hanging of the Mittens. The purpose of this activity is to decorate the college Christmas tree with hats, gloves, scarves, and other winter wear items. Once the tree is taken down, all of the items will be donated to local charities to help keep children in need warm during the winter months. Over the last 19 years, it is estimated that over 5,000 winter items have been hung on the tree at HCC to be donated to children in the area.
In the past, Heather, along with her students, had provided music for the event most of the years during her tenure at HCC. As a special feature of this year’s tradition, Heather, who started at HCC in 1989 and retired in 2010, has agreed to provide a musical performance of various holiday favorites at the celebration. The college will provide refreshments and everyone from the community is invited to attend this celebration and bring along a winter item to add to the tree.
This will be the last year the event will be held in the SCR Building since the college has decided to discontinue using the facility. All services and functions of this building will be relocated to various locations on campus beginning in January 2020.
HCC is located at 2660 South Green Street in Henderson, KY. For more information on the college or our programs, please visit www.henderson.kctcs.edu.
