Workforce Solutions Offers Safety Training for Spanish-Speakers
Workforce Solutions at Henderson Community College is offering an Occupational Safety amp; Health Administration (OSHA) 30 hour course in general industry for Spanish-speaking workers.
The course is designed for workers and supervisors with organizational safety responsibilities
and is translated and taught in Spanish for better comprehension and understanding
of the training.
The course is designed to teach safety awareness and help personnel to recognize and
reduce the risks of job site hazards.
According to OSHA assistant Secretary David Michaels, Latino workers face the most
dangerous working conditions and the fewest protections. In 2010, an average of 14
Latino workers died each week as a result of workplace accidents. Many of those accidents
could have been prevented with proper safety training and tools, according to OSHA.
The 30-hour OSHA General Industry-Spanish course will be held over five weeks on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting July 20 with an hour lunch break. Training will be held on campus at the Sullivan Technology Center in Room 310. The cost per person is $250. Students, upon completion, will receive their 30 hour OSHA card. The class is limited to 30 students so those interested are encouraged to register early.
