HCC Summer Enrichment Program

Henderson Community College is in the process of making preparations for its Summer Enrichment Program. The program will be held June 6, 2011 through June 10, 2011. Classes are from 8:30am to 12:00noon. Lunch and transportation to Henderson Community College are provided daily.

The Summer Enrichment Program is designed as a one week non-residential program for middle and junior high school African-American students from Henderson and Union Counties. Students are offered enrichment classes in Math, Reading, Science, college preparations, learning styles, career explorations and personal/social developments. The program aims to prepare minority students to be successful in high school and college level work and to persist to high school and college graduation. Students will hear and hopefully retain the importance of high school graduation and post secondary education. Culturally based experiences are a part of the curriculum designed to enhance self-esteem.

In short, the Summer Enrichment Program has 3 main objectives:

  1. To provide academic enrichment activities for middle and junior high school (grades 6-8), school minority students and encourage them to stay in school and enter college;
  2. Make young African Americans students aware of the benefits and value of college and consider college as an achievable option; and
  3. Prepare these students to be successful in college level work and persist to college graduation.

Applications for the program are now available in the guidance office at the following schools: Henderson North Middle School, Henderson South Middle School and Union County Middle School. The applications are to be completed by parents then returned to the school counselor, before being forwarded to HCC. The deadline for applications is May 17, 2011.
