Academic Holiday/Thanksgiving Break

FAFSA Verification

What is Verification?

FAFSA Verification is a process in which the college and Department of Education audit income and household information provided by the student and parents against actual tax documents.  Being selected for verification does not mean that you completed the application incorrectly or did something wrong.   Most selectees are chosen at random, though reporting zero income will normally require verification.

How do I know if I was selected?

You will be emailed and advised that additional actions are required once your FAFSA has been received and reviewed by the college.  There is a link in the email that will take you to sign in to your Student Self-Service Account.  You can also go directly to your account from this webpage by clicking the "Student Self-Service" link at the top of the page. 

How do I complete the verification process?

You will sign in to your Student Self-Service account and click on the "Tasks" icon, and the "Financial Aid Issue" link showing the current financial aid year.  You will then click on "Resolve Financial Aid Issue".  You will then see all items required to complete.

At minumum, you will need to complete an online verification worksheet. You may be required to submit additional paperwork. Each item required in the portal will have specific directions on how to obtain the needed documents.  Once items are uploaded or completed they will show a status of received, satisfied, or incomplete status in your portal.  

Check the status of the submitted documents frequently until all items show as waived or satisfied. 

The completion of the verification process is not optional and must be completed before any financial aid awards will be offered. The failure to submit verification in a timely manner may delay disbursements and could exempt a student from utilizing bookstore charge dates.

How do I submit my verification documents?

The preferred submission method is uploading directly into the portal.  However, you can also bring documents to the HCC FInancial Aid Office, located in the Start Center, 2nd floor of the Sullivan Technology Center.  You can also fax to 270-831-9612, email to henderson-financialaid@kctcs.edu, or submit via mail to:

How long does the verification process take?

Verification processing time is unique with each student. During peak times the process may take several weeks. To expedite the process, you should read and complete your forms carefully and submit all requested documents in a timely manner.

I completed Verification at another KCTCS school, do I still need to complete at HCC?

Yes. If your FAFSA was selected for Verification, you must complete the process with each institution you attend. Verification does not transfer with you. Also, you must ensure that HCC's school code (001993) is on your FAFSA if you are changing schools mid-year..
