Dental Hygiene

About the Program

We can put you on the fast track to two different high-paying jobs in dentistry:

  • Dental assistants work with dentists and perform lab and X-ray work.
  • Dental hygienists provide cleaning, exams, and X-rays under supervision of a dentist.

How do I know if I'm Interested in the Dental Hygiene Program?

If you are interested in finding out more about the Dental Hygiene program, you can attend a Pre-Admission Conference.

Where do dental assistants and hygienists work?

  • Dental assistants are employed by dentists, oral surgeons, periodontists, pediatric dentists, and orthodontists.
  • Dental hygienists work in dental offices, clinics, dental schools, and public health and government agencies.

What do I study?

In dental hygiene, you gain scientific knowledge through lectures, clinical work, and related courses. In both dental hygiene and dental assisting, you take courses in the following:

  • General studies
  • Biomedical sciences
  • Dental sciences
  • Clinical sciences
  • Radiography (X-rays)
  • Clinical experience

Check the Dental Assistant/Dental Hygiene Academic Plan for more information. The Dental Hygiene program is a Selective Admissions program. The Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting programs are accredited by the American Dental Association's Council on Dental Accreditation (CODA).

What do I get for my hard work?

With a degree in dental hygiene, you are ready to take the Dental Hygiene National Board Examination. Our dental assistance program prepares you to take the Dental Assisting National Board Examination. Assistants may also earn certificates in:

  • Coronal Polishing
  • Expanded-Duty Dental Assisting
  • Dental Radiology
