Do you need some extra writing help?

The HCC Writing Center is a free service for HCC students, faculty, and staff. We offer assistance and guidance with written assignments and projects in a variety of academic disciplines. Our writing consultants and trained student tutors can help with . . .

  • The writing process stages (prewriting, discovery drafting, revising, editing/proofreading, and publishing)
  • References and citations
  • Annotated bibliographies
  • Research strategies

The Center’s mission is to help writers of all skill levels and in all disciplines develop and use effectively writing processes that will serve them for a lifetime.

At the Center, students can . . .

  • Get Feedback – Our tutors are great sounding boards and are happy to discuss with students the ideas they are developing for any writing assignment. The helpful Center staff strive to create an environment that fosters creative and critical thinking.
  • Learn Strategies – The tutors can help students learn techniques to generate ideas, organize thoughts, develop thesis statements, and revise drafts.
  • Review their writing – Our tutors can help students proofread their papers and will offer suggestions for revisions. More importantly, our tutors can help students structure their papers and clarify their arguments. We want to help all students become stronger, more confident writers.

The Writing Center will hold an open house on Wednesday, 8/23, and Thursday, 8/24. Come by, check us out, meet a tutor, and have a nosh.

When is the Writing Center open?

Mondays through Thursdays: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Fridays: by appointment only

Where is the Writing Center located?

The Center is located in the Administration Bldg., Room ADM 205. If your schedule does not permit you to visit during regular hours, contact Bill Gary at 270-831-9638, or Cheryl McKendree at 270-831-9684, to make an appointment to meet with a writing consultant or peer tutor at a mutually convenient time.

Do you want to work in the Writing Center?

Students who have completed ENG101 and ENG102 with a B or an A and qualify for a work-study program (fill out an application with the Financial Aid office) are welcome to apply as a peer tutor. The Writing Center staff will train you. For more information, contact Bill Gary at 270-831-9638.
