Henderson Community College will offer at least 28 fewer courses next fall as a result of state funding cuts of about $253,000 in the college's coming budget year.
It's too early to tell which classes will no longer be offered, but HCC President Pat Lake said the president of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System asked his colleges to target enrollment in the face of funding issues.
"We will probably look at increasing class sizes," Lake said Tuesday.
The cuts will also affect three full-time staffing positions.
Three people who are currently employed by the college will be retiring at the end of this academic year. They will not be replaced, Lake said.
There will also be some cuts in the operating budget at HCC.
Roughly $30,000 had been set aside for project-based learning programs for faculty. Those programs were aimed at trying out new teaching strategies and technologies. Portions of that money had also been set aside for marketing and public relations. Those areas will be affected by the cuts, Lake said.
Meanwhile, the college is getting closer to moving staff into the new William L. Sullivan Technology Center.
Lake said minor changes are being made to the structure as it stands now and the college is currently finalizing the details of the move, which should take place in phases starting May 12.
The move will take all summer. The first classes in the building will be held in the fall, Lake said.
