Henderson Community College's student newspaper earned 16 awards at the annual Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association convention held Feb. 29 through March 1 in Lexington.
Student journalists attended workshops and dinners with guest speakers from various media organizations. An awards ceremony was held March 1.
The Hill was presented with 16 awards in 32 categories. The competition is divided into two divisions, depending on the school's enrollment.
The Hill competed against student newspapers from Bellarmine University, Asbury College, Lindsey Wilson College, Georgetown College and Elizabethtown, Somerset and Hopkinsville community colleges.
B.C. Thomas, editor of The Hill, won Journalist of the Year, the top award at the convention. The honor is given to the student who garners the most individual honors in the competition. Thomas is the eighth student from The Hill to win the award since it started in 1988.
First-place awards were presented to Thomas for sports photo and sports page layout. Brent Dunn earned a first place for news photo, and Franklyn McIntosh earned a first place for sports column.
Second-place winners were Thomas for news story, Kenya Miller for photo essay, Todd Strawn and Emily Twilley for special sections, Stephanie Mitchell for ad design and the 2007 spring staff for overall page layout.
Third-place awards were presented to Thomas for editorials and sports headline writing, Leo Curtis for commentary, Debbie Dunn for news photo, Debbie Dunn and Miller for photo essay and Ryan Conway for advertising campaign.
Debbie Dunn also received an honorable mention for feature photos.
Thomas, sports reporter Will Whobrey, reporter Chris Wright, columnist Drew Hendrix and adviser Tony Strawn attended the convention.
