Questions about FAFSA |
To be considered for financial aid, students are encouraged to apply early. Applications are processed until all available funds are awarded. Applications are available at HCC's Financial Aid Office or from most high school counseling offices. To expedite processing, students may apply on-line by accessing the federal web site at www.fafsa.ed.gov
Financial aid is awarded only to students working toward a degree. Students must be enrolled at HCC and must maintain satisfactory progress in his/her course of study.
By following the procedures outlined below, students will receive consideration for almost all types of federal and state aid administered through the college.
Each financial aid applicant must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid to the federal processor designating HendersonCommunity College as the college of choice. Out of state students must also apply using the FAFSA. The priority application for a Kentucky State Cap Grant is March 15th.
By completing the FAFSA application, students are considered for the following aid programs:

- Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
- FederalCollege Work-study (CWS)
- KHEAA College Access Program Grant (CAP), residents of KY only

Academic scholarship applications are available in the Financial Aid Office (AD 100) in December. Scholarship applications must be submitted by February 15th. Scholarship applications will soon be available on-line.

Help writing a resume |
Career Services maintains a lab (AD 202) which includes a wide array of resources for individuals seeking career information. A variety of guidebooks are available on topics including resume and cover letter writing, interviewing skills and techniques, and job search strategies. Also available in the lab are computers and a laser printer for those wishing to produce a resume or other related documents.

Career Services also provides job referral for full-time and part-time positions. Information about job opportunities and assistance in securing employment is available to all currently enrolled students, graduates and alumni of HCC. Located on the second floor of the AdministrationBuilding (Room 202), the StudentSuccessCenter is an area in which services to facilitate learning and to foster academic success are offered to all HCC students. Academic assistance is provided on a free, drop-in basis through peer tutors and faculty members. Individual assistance is also given by the Student Success Center Coordinator and is available in study and reading skills.
Students are able to utilize word processing and other CAI software as well as complete COMPASS in the StudentSuccessCenter's eight station computer lab. COMPASS--used to identify students' present academic strengths and needs in the areas of math, writing, and reading--serves as a tool to place students in the appropriate selection of courses commensurate with their current skills.
Generally the StudentSuccessCenter is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please be mindful that changes will occur as necessary to accommodate the needs of the students.

Academic Assistance is available during the fall and spring semesters in the StudentSuccessCenter now located in AD 202. Our tutor staff consists of both dedicated faculty and qualified HCC students. CLEP Exam
The student must contact ACT and request that his/her “official” CLEP exam score report be sent directly to the HCC Admissions & Records Office. The student is awarded credit based on the established KCTCS criteria for awarding credit for CLEP exams (found in the KCTCS catalog).

Special Technical Education Proficiency (STEP) Exam
Formerly known as challenge exams, STEP exams are available for:

Portfolio for Credit for Experience
The student must contact the appropriate program faculty member for approval to submit a portfolio for credit consideration. If the faculty member approves, the student completes the Application for Assessment and the Authenticity Statement and submits these documents to the faculty member for his/her signature and keeping. At this time, the student pays the nonrefundable $75/course fee. Working with the faculty member, the student prepares a draft of the portfolio and submits to the faculty member the completed portfolio for evaluation along with the Credit Request Final Portfolio Assessment Form. The Portfolio Assessment Committee evaluates the portfolio to determine if credit should be awarded. If awarded, credit will be noted on the student’s official academic transcript. See KCTCS catalog for additional details.

Audit
Students must indicate on the official schedule card that it is their intention to audit by placing a check in the AUDIT column. Otherwise, it is assumed the class is being taken for college credit. Any change from credit to audit must be made by mid-term; any change from audit to credit must be made by the last day to enter a class. Regular tuition fees apply.

The student must have remained out of KCTCS for a period of 2 or more academic years and must have completed at least 12 credit hours in non-developmental courses with a grade point average of 2.0 or better after re-enrolling. See KCTCS catalog for more details.

Preparing for GED exams |
What are GED Tests?
GED Tests are five tests in the areas of writing skills, social studies, science, literature and the arts, and mathematics. The questions in each of these tests require you to use general knowledge and thinking skills. The AdultLearningCenter can help you prepare for the GED Tests which are given monthly at HendersonCommunity College. The GED Tests are given monthly at the College.
GED tests are given several times throughout the year. Prior to testing, all examinees must meet a "test readiness" requirement and obtain and application to take the exam. Applications for applicants under nineteen (19) years of age must be made at the Henderson County Board of Education Office. Applications for applicants over nineteen can be made at any of the local Adult Education & Literacy providers. Testing for the GED begins at 12 noon and ends at approximately 5 p.m. both days.
The GED testing fee is $40.00 for the entire battery of tests or $10.00 per sub-test, except writing which is $11.85 when re-testing. Fees must be paid prior to testing at the AdultLearningCenter, Room 7, AdministrationBuilding. To obtain more information on GED testing, call Gail Bushrod at (270) 831-9672.
All students must pass the Official Practice GED Test before taking the actual eight-hour tests. The Practice Test will be available at all class sites.

Library Skills Instruction
The Research Process: Any successful project depends on the research behind it. Find out how to use the Library to get the information that you need to get the job done right.
Pathfinder to the Library I : This text has been written to assist HCC English 101 students in learning how to use an academic library. Emphasis is on indexes, catalogs and electronic databases. Students must demonstrate learned competencies by passing an exam. All grading will be performed by HCC librarians with the results communicated to the respective English instructor.
Pathfinder to the Library II : This text focuses on the evaluation of print, audio-visual, and electronic information. HCC English 102 students will learn how to use appropriate materials for their assignments and papers. Examples of the selection process have been provided along with specific reference sources held by the Hartfield Library.
Learning Library Presentation : A Learning-Centered Approach to Library Skills Instruction in the Community College.
Electronic Library Services
Media Services: Media services of the Hartfield Library consist of audiovisual equipment setup, desktop publishing, and binding services.
Reference Services: The Hartfield Library staff provides basic reference services to all students, faculty, staff, administration, and members of the community in HCC's three-county service region of Henderson, Union, and Webster Counties (KY).
Recent Acquisitions: Peruse the new arrivals at the library including DVDs, videotapes, books and reference materials.
Periodical Directory: The following list includes all hard copy and microform titles of periodicals held by the Harfield Library. For access to the library's electronic titles, refer to InfoTrac, Ebsco, Proquest, Grolier, NewsBank, and FirstSearch.
Kentucky Libraries: Visit the uncommon wealth of electronic library services from these other Kentucky libraries.
KUDZA Libraries: Kudzu connects approximately 300,000 students and faculty to more than 30 million volumes. The system allows users to browse the participating catalogs using a single search interface and to submit interlibrary loan requests directly to the source library. Most documents can be delivered to the user within a few days.

All employees should be alert for suspicious activity and should report this to the Safety Officer - David Campbell - 19632, who will complete a report and coordinate a response. This vigilance on the part of campus personnel is the best defense against unauthorized activity and provides the greatest likelihood of identifying offenders. In the rare instance when a serious crime is suspected the Henderson Police Department will be called to investigate. In such cases the campus community will be notified of the occurrence. In case of emergency, call campus operator during day hours or library personnel after regular office hours.

The College’s liability for traffic accidents is limited to its reasonable efforts to provide a safe environment. If you hit someone’s car or your car is hit, please report it to either the campus operator or the library personnel so that they may The Safety Office- david Campbell - 19632, will fill out an internal report and assist drivers in contacting authorities, but the Henderson Police Department will make the official report required by insurance carriers.

Purchase tickets for FAC event |
Ticket Office Hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In addition to regular hours, it opens two hours prior to curtain. The office is closed on holidays.
Charge by phone at (270) 831-9800 or toll-free at 800-291-3402. Visa, MasterCard and Discover are accepted. A service charge of $2.00 is added to each ticket purchased. Tickets may be picked up at the box office or mailed.

How do I know which books I need? |
Students may find out what textbooks they need by visiting the on-campus bookstore, located on the main (top) floor of the StudentCenter. Each semester, faculty members provide a listing of the books they will use for each class. The courses are then listed alphabetically by course name and section number so when buying books, students simply need to bring a copy of their schedule to find out what books they need to purchase. Bookstore staff is available to help if the student should have any questions.

Student break rooms with soda and snack vending machines may be found in the basement of the Administration Building, the top floor of the AT building. The StudentCenter offers The Grill, a place for students and staff to get refreshments, either homemade or from vending machines.

Do I need a parking pass? |
You do not currently need a parking pass to park on HCC campus. Vehicles on campus must only be parked in marked, designated spaces. Those parked improperly on the lawns, in driveways or loading zones, or across the space lines are subject to ticketing and/or towing. A few spaces on campus are reserved for disabled drivers and for employee incentive winners. These spots are clearly marked; all other parking is open to all vehicles.

Are meal plans available? |
HCC does not have meal plans. Individual meals or snacks may be purchased in The Grill, located on the main floor the StudentCenter.

May I fish in the

No fishing or swimming is allowed in the on-campus lake.

Where can I go between classes? |
There are several places for students to take a break between classes. In addition to the Hatfield Library, student break rooms may be found in the basement of the Administration Building, the top floor of the AT building. The Student Center offers The Grill, a place for students and staff to get refreshments, either homemade or from vending machines, and the Game Room, which features two pool tables, two foosball tables, and a ping pong table for student use.

How will I know if classes are cancelled because of weather? |
Inclement Weather
Classes may be cancelled due to inclement weather. Students, faculty, and staff should listen to WMSK in Morganfield, WSON & WKDQ in Henderson, WEHT TV25 & WFIE14 in Evansville or the HCC homepage on the web.
If a local school district cancels school, off-campus classes that are taught at schools in that district will be cancelled.
Canceled classes due to inclement weather are required to be made-up. Announcements of make-up days will be made in classes and in the student newspaper, The Hill. If a public school should be canceled by a local school district, off-campus classes that are taught at schools in that district will also be canceled.

What if I run out of printer pages? |
Student Printing Policy
Each student begins the semester with $5.00 in their printing account. On the first of each month in the current semester
Fall semester - September, October & November
Spring Semester – February, March, April
students will receive an additional $1.25 in their accounts.
Each page that is printed will be counted and deducted from the total in your account. For each black and white page printed, $.05 will be deducted. For each color page printed, $.50 cents will be deducted. If you attempt to print more pages than you have funds available you will not be able to print.
Account balances are NOT carried over into the next semester.
Students may purchase additional pages from Technology Solutions at the Help Desk - AS232 or in AD 119.

Where are the student comp labs? |
Computer Lab Information
Computer lab schedules and locations:
Student labs are open -
Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and
Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Library Lab - Room 201 - 25 computers - some English classes use this lab and they may be closed at times specified by instructors. The computer lab operates on the same schedule as the library open hours.
Arts & ScienceBuilding - AS232 - 20 computers - this lab is always open for students.
AdministrationBuilding - AD208 - 20 computers - this lab has a schedule posted that will let you know when classes are using the lab. It is open for students when there is not a class meeting.
AcademicTechnicalBuilding- AT300 Louge area - 3 computers for checking email and schedules, there is no printer available - these computers are always open to students.
When school is not in session the labs are closed unless otherwise noted.

Use HART to get to campus |
Bus Service
Henderson Area Rapid Transit (HART) will begin a revised bus schedule on January 2, 2008. Instead of the usual bus transportation and route to Henderson Community College, a van will be transporting riders directly to Henderson Community College. This van will depart from Third and Main Streets at 7:30 am, 11:30 am, and 3:30 pm daily. The van will arrive at HCC at approximately 40 minutes after the hour and depart immediately after unloading. The van will return directly to Third and Main Streets. If you have any questions, please call HART directly at (270) 831-1249.
